James Cagney stars in this classic 1930s US crime drama directed by William Wellman. Set in 1900’s Chicago, the film follows childhood friends Tom Powers (Cagney) and Matt Doyle (Edward Woods) as they rise from the city’s slums to become fearsome gangsters. The pair start off with carrying out petty crimes and selling their goods to criminal Putty Nose (Murray Kinnell) but when Prohibition arrives in 1920 the pair move into the more lucrative business of bootlegging, working for Paddy Ryan (Robert Emmett O’Connor) and Samuel ‘Nails’ Nathan (Leslie Fenton). With their new power and wealth, the pair attract unwanted attention from rivals wanting to take their place at the top.
