Nicholas Meyer directs this sci-fi adventure drama starring Malcolm McDowell. In 1893 London, author HG Wells (McDowell) has succeeded in building his own time machine and is showing it off to his dinner guests one evening when his new invention is hijacked by his friend John Leslie Stevenson (David Warner), who uses it to escape the police after they deduce he is the serial killer known as Jack the Ripper. Wells follows his friend to 1979 San Francisco where he is shocked to discover the chaos of modern society. Mistakenly believing his friend has died, Wells begins a romance with Amy Robbins (Mary Steenburgen) and shares his secret invention with her. However, when they venture into the future together, they discover Stevenson has continued his killing spree once again. Will they be able to stop him once and for all?
